1 hour numbers coming up I am at block 443942
It is slower than I thought I was under the belief 2-3 hours was possible with
1100 connection. I am guessing it will be 3 to 4 hours not 2-3
Are you using the default settings (no bitcoin.conf entries)
Or is it optimized for that hardware, for example, your dbcache settings?
Any additional "index" like txidex, blockfilterindex or coinstatsindex?
I also thought of asking if it's connecting through Tor but the GUI shows it not connected via proxy.
Mac arm cpu chip has weird ram setup
the net at 1100 was allowing 110gb an hour
time was 829 pm to 333am or 6 hours and some change. Fell asleep and missed exact end time so it could have been just under 6 hours not just over.
it was a lot slower than I thought it would be
my cable has a 2000 speed available.
I will likely upgrade to get the 2000 speed.
this pc has a 10,000 speed. Or 10gb port
my upgrade path is
1gb to 2gb to 5gb to 8gb
I can justify the 2gb as it is 20 bucks a month more. and a 200 dollar gift card so cost is zero for 10 months.
I wonder if this time it will drop from 6 to 3 hours.
I did this with stock settings.
I knew that I will very likely upgrade to 2gb speed in a month or so.
This is the eth cable
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08P2W68PR?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1
I connected the 1gb router to this switch.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CCD7P283?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1
The router has a 2.5gb port if I upgrade to it.
The switch will do 2.5gb
The wire should go to 5gb but optimum cable charges a lot for 5gb and 8gb speeds.
I WILL DO a 2gb up grade and test stock.
I WILL THEN DO some cache changes.
I never stressed ram almost always under 6gb of the ram was used.
But the cpu got up to 263%
Since it is a 10 core it can go to 1000%
Need to check if it is a 10 core
14 core so it can go to 1400%
It is a pretty good pc.
I GET multiple discounts so I paid 1900 usd vs 2800 usd
Below is the intel i9 14900 vs my 14 core m4
https://www.cpu-monkey.com/en/compare_cpu-apple_m4_pro_14_cpu_20_gpu-vs-intel_core_i9_14900k
Yeah spending 2500-2700 for a node is not normal.
But I do a lot of Apple I get discounts and have been looking to get a Mac studio
I like that I could go to 10gb on the net.
In a bit I will do the 2gb upgrade.
I WILL MAKE sure I do not fall asleep and miss the exact time. Say 5:55 to 6:04 hours.
What interests is the last hour and or last year is 17% of the data.
So at 700gb 119gb was the last year.
A 2tb ssd is now at 1.25 to left
4 years is at least 480gb which will give me under 0.7tb
I WOULD THINK I GET 5 YEARS WITH THIS PC
Unlikely. I'd spend the 20 bucks per month for life on something else I can't think of any reason other than bragging rights to need 2 Gbit/s at home.
Apart from your own internet speed, the nodes you're connecting to also need to have sufficient bandwidth to your place.
For reference: a year ago my 6-Core Xeon (from 2019) with 32 GB RAM and HDD took 11 hours and 10 minutes
Yeah you never know the connection you get.
I plan to move next year. So if I spend 13 months at 20 it is 260 and a 200 buck rebate means I spend 60 bucks.
ITS A NICE MACHINE. For apple it is fairly cheap
IIRC from the release notes Bitcoin Core v29.0 dropped a limit of 16GB max for dbcache which wasn't very apparent in former versions.
For a speedy IBD I would set dbcache to at least 16GB when the current UTXO set is somewhere in the ballpark of 12GB. Set also blocksonly=1 during IBD so that your node doesn't have to accept and bother with verification of transactions and own mempool maintenance.
You'll be disappointed otherwise if you don't optimize some settings for a fast IBD when you have sufficient RAM. Also you don't want to torture your SSD...
LOL
If you open debug.log file, it store information exact time when it download and verify latest block before IBD completed.
But at such price, there are very few mini PC that have similar CPU performance compared with OP's device. Although you could get mini PC with Ryzen AI or X3D CPU that have better price/performance ratio.
Six to seven hours for a complete IBD is quite nice. The exact spot when IBD finished is logged in the debug.log file as ABCbits said.
You'll see something like (scroll to the right to see the progress=... indicator)
progress=1.000000 indicates, the node is at chain tip. You wouldn't need to stay up for it.
Regarding the price for the Mac Studio: with the rebates it's indeed quite nice, I overread what philipma1957 actually paid. Maybe I'm also no fanboy of Apple's price policies for upgrade options of their gear which are ridiculous in my opinion. No intention or need to debate this here.
I started internet sales in 1997 on audiogon
I started buying mac minis in 2005 the white plastic model.
I purchased about 100 from 2005 to 2012 upgraded and sold them on ebay
I could buy a 400 dollar base mini put in 200 in parts and sell for 1000 on ebay.
That mini would be better than anything apple sold.
Best year I did 250,000 in sales of souped up minis
So minis got locked down and you needed expensive solder gear to change them.
I then switched to 2 card gamer miner pcs. I stayed loyal to Mac as they got me into btc
Anandtech
Macrumors.com
123macmini
Had 1000's of posts by me before I got into btc.
This mac studio is pretty good.
But I had 2000 in gift cards which I got by using cc's to buy mining gear over the last few years.
And I purchased the 2000 in cards for 1800 in points as my cc's run gift card sales.
I purchased it via the veteran store on apple that is 10% off.
So 2770 became 2500 use the cards it is 2000 off or 500 out of pocket. Buy with a cc that gives 3% off the 500 is 15 off so 485 out of pocket. Makes it good.
If you just buy it with zero deals you pay 2770
To me I don't mind apple prices as they pivoted me into btc.
I am more of a gear head than a developer.
So I did a full check on higher speed net I can go to 2gb vs 1gb.
They will charge 20 a month more and since I am with them they will not give me the 200 gift card promo.
I WILL look at logs to find exact time
829pm to 333am is 7 hours and 4 minutes I had checked at 2am and had 70000 blocks left so I know it finished really close to 333am
I call it 7 hours download of about 100gb an hour.
