Hey everyone, I’m just starting out with bitcoin and I want to set it up on my own machine.
I checked out the docs and saw that it requires some pretty recent versions of tools:
Autoconf 2.69
Automake 1.13
Clang 13.0
GCC 10.1
The problem is, I’m running CentOS 7, and my gcc and g++ are stuck at 4.8.
Do I really need to upgrade all these tools? Seems like a hassle for someone who's new to this. I’d appreciate any advice. Thanks!
Do I need to update my gcc version to compile bitcoin?

Yes. Bitcoin Core uses features that are not available in older compiler versions, notably C++17 and C++20.
