There's been some buzz about BTQ working on a fork testnet that uses ML-DSA (Module-Lattice Digital Signature Algorithm) instead of ECDSA for testing quantum-resistant transactions. Apparently, ML-DSA is the same algorithm the US government is looking at for their national security stuff.
They mentioned this would lead to an experimental fork that acts as a testing ground to prep for the "quantum age" rather than to replace Bitcoin.
Do you guys think this is a legit move towards preparing for quantum issues, or just another scheme to launch a BTC fork and grab some hype?

So this is a upgraded version of your existing technology, since you're afraid of security. I'm afraid Us intelligence will spent this much resources to crack some bitcoin private keys. Also BTQ would be launching their own new token no soft fork for Bitcoin.
I suggest to move this topic to Technical and Development Section unless you're making things more easy to understand for all.

The power needed to break the existing algo is so big it won't happen anyway in a loooong time, long enough to just ball it out and live without such thoughts, imo.

It's just a test network, and no I don't concern myself with that at all. In fact, I'd argue it's more likely bitcoin gets destroyed by quantum computers than a random fork beating its network effect. It's a good initiative. In order to even consider migrating to a quantum resistant algorithm, we need to write code and test it in a separate environment.
The quantum threat is definitely a good FUD. Nobody can really debunk it with certainty, and it absolutely threatens the system, if such computer were to become real. It's the final boss test for bitcoin holders.
As he said this is just a test and nothing is certain here so although it looks very good as an anticipation or early preparation about quantum computers that are overrated rumors it is also like a situation where we are afraid that quantum computers will definitely happen.
Until now I don't believe or maybe it's more like not caring about quantum computers because for me it's just an exaggerated rumor but there is still no relevant proof to date and with this test it will actually increase the confidence of ordinary people about quantum that it is really very good even though we don't even believe quantum will definitely be realized like the claims they are always raising now.
