So I'm in the EU where electricity costs a bomb. Right now, I've got over 20 ASIC miners running at home and honestly, I'm pretty pleased with the profits, even with the rate at 0.16€/KWH.
I've teamed up with a buddy who's also mining from home, and we're looking to expand to a small mining farm. I managed to snag a sweet electricity deal at 0.07€/KWH for 1MW, plus I found a warehouse. The catch is, it's a 2-hour flight away from where I live.
I'm really considering making the move to set up this farm for us and possibly other miners too. The warehouse is solid, it has good ventilation and is secured with guards 24/7. We just need to bring on one or two techs to keep things running. But I'm a bit lost on what type of tech skills I should be looking for. I was thinking maybe some basic IT and networking knowledge would do, but I’m not sure since managing 300+ ASICs is a different ball game compared to mining at home.
And about the electricity setup, since this is gonna be more industrial-scale mining, should I also look into hiring an electrical technician?

Ensure you read up about using a proxy.
No one with 100 or more miners should have them connected to the internet at all.
Connect them to a proxy, and the miner's internet usage will be the same as 1 single miner, with the added gains that implies: to increase average connectivity performance.
you need a few things.
a proxy maybe maybe not as it depends if every unit is pointed to 1 spot.
But you need remote operations
I run a mixed gear mine.
I mine with 50 asics. In one location
I mine with 75 gpus. In five locations soon to be six.
I can access all units via my home pc.
As for a direct tech you need an on call guy to manually alter gear when needed. this will be sporadic 1 or 2 times a month maybe more maybe less.
He also will need to clean and inspect gear on a 3 to 9 month basis. this is an all day or 2 day job. so it could be 3 x 2 = 6 full days of work.

Like most miners, they'd send hash rate to either 1 or 2 targets, with backup pools.
Thus you run (at least) 2 proxies.
Each proxy has a list of pools, the main one and the backups, exactly like you do in the miner.
The difference between each proxy would be the choice of the preferred pool.
Also, if you run 3 proxies, you point the miners at the 3 in their preferred order, and thus your whole network becomes the equivalent of 3 miners,
and each physical miner fails over to the other proxy settings for the one it's connected to, or the other proxies if anything ever has an outage.
Anyone running their own farm without proxies simply has never understood what a proxy is - it simplifies everything with only gain, no loss.
You also never need to change the miner settings, if you wish to change your pool choices, you simply change the proxy settings.
The proxy should allow you to monitor each miner directly, so choose the right one.
You need a certified /experienced electrician to set up the electricity infrastructure, but you don't need one 24/7, once a while a fuse or an MCB will need to be changed, but that should be on-call basis, there is no point hiring someone just for that if the set up is perfect you might not need an electrician for years, if ever.
Since the place is secured, you need someone who can access the farm "physically" in the shortest time possible, if everything runs fine and the farm is in a passive state you will only need someone to go there to clean the miners maybe once a month or quarterly (it will depend on how clean the air is), but problems like a dead PSU or a miner that needs hard reboot are ever going, and there is really no way for you to know how frequent you are going to need that someone.
In other words, let's say you pay that person $100 per visit/task vs $2000 a month for full-time attendance at the farm, so if you have 50 miners, then paying per visit would make more sense, if you have to say 500 miners then the number of visits will probably be a lot higher and thus paying $2000 a month would be better, this depends entirely on what options you have and how many miners you have because the more miners you have the more likely you face issues.
The person you need to hire doesn't need to have an IT certificate, basic IT knowledge is enough, and of course, he needs to know how to use a screwdriver , most things he will be doing are:
- Changing a dead PSU
- Replacing a dead fan
- Changing a LAN cable
You will need to monitor everything from home and tell him for example, change fan.2 on miner number 111, but if you want someone to fully operate the farm then you might want a full-time employee.
You should also use monitoring software such as AwesomeMiner, learn how to use it (it isn't all that simple), once you master it, it will be as good as having 2-3 employees who are watching every gear 24/7, the software itself will reboot the miner if needed, control the hash rate, reduce it if the miner gets hot, increase it if it's cold, send you an email/telegram messages when a miner goes offline and etc., this drastically reduces the need of someone to be in the farm, and thus saves you a lot of money.
Wrong. there is a loss in monitoring the individual miner performance, if the hashrate drops at the pool, you will need to manually check which miner is having a problem, also there is a single point of failure if the hardware that hosts the proxy has any issues the whole farm will go offline, so you will need a few back-ups to escape that, if bandwidth isn't an issue, the use of proxy has more disadvantages than advantages, also, most open source proxy projects are abandoned and buggy as hell.
