Hey there, I’ve got this bitcoin lottery machine set up. The miner’s got 4Th, but I’m only using it at 1Th. There’s something that’s been bugging me that I can't seem to figure out. On the miner's admin panel, it mentions difficulty and diffA. After a few days of running, the diffA is sitting around 40,000,000. When I switch off the miner, it resets back to 0. If I check the difficulty of new blocks, they’re around 40,000,000,000 or something like that. So, is it true that the miner has to run for weeks just to get close to the current block difficulty? Or am I totally off here?

DiffA is the amount of work accepted by whatever you are mining to. If you are solo mining, it means very little. Finding a block is random, you are not working up to finding it. https://kano.is/index.php?k=poisson On Bitcoin your chances of finding a block in a day with 1TH is 1 in 998319.7 (i.e. about 1 in a million) http://tradebtc.net/bitcalc.php If you are pool mining, your reward is based on the amount of work you've sent to the pool when they reward you. The miner simply keeps track of the amount of work you've done since last you started it. If you are asking about some other coin, then don't do that here in the Bitcoin area.

Each and every share you do is a shot for a block.  It is an unlikely shot but a shot. As Kano said 1th is about 1,000,000 for a day You have 4th so if it is BTC you overall daily chance is 250,000 to 1 or basically most unlikely
