Hey everyone, I'm Lucas from Argentina. I'm interested in coding for bitcoin core, bitcoin knots, or any bitcoin client, and I'd like to earn some rewards for my work. Are there any bounties or incentives for developers fixing issues on GitHub related to bitcoin clients? How does one actually get started with this? I’m not looking to tackle massive issues that offer 1 million sats right off the bat. I’d be happy to begin with some easier tasks that pay a smaller amount of sats. I have experience coding in C++, Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, and Java, plus I know a bit about Qt, which I believe is what bitcoin core uses. I’ve compiled bitcoin core a few times for testing with regtest, so I get how the build process and dependencies work. If anyone has any tips or knows how I can get involved, please shout out. I’m eager to contribute to bitcoin.

I believe this answer from 2017 is still relevant on today's condition, see https://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/a/62142. So don't expect to get any financial reward when you just got started. Alternatively, you may want to try your luck by register on fellowship/training program that pay you while you work and learn. For example, see https://brink.dev/programs.

Just like in any job, you should first build your portfolio or your resume. You get unpaid internships but will look good in your resume. Same with bitcoin dev work. You should first stack credibility by contributing to the community even if unpaid. You can check here for issues you can fix as a beginner: https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/issues?q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+label%3A%22good+first+issue%22 Being in touch with the community can help massively. Just follow the right people and check the right places. If a grant is off the table, you would need to be patient and build your portfolio before you can earn significant amount.

Bitcoin software is mostly open-source, so it mostly relies on donations from third parties. That means you'll have to start contributing to popular projects for free, and then later hope that one of the Bitcoin grants notices and starts funding your work. It's part of the reason why not many developers are available for these sort of projects.

According to my knowledge, most of the developers working on Bitcoin core are early miners who work voluntarily to develop the ecosystem out of their enthusiasm for Bitcoin, and this is why we see only people who are raw Bitcoin enthusiasts operating the Bitcoin node these days. Nevertheless, you can get a spot as the Bitcoin core dev, and get paid (but not guaranteed though because we have alot of dev who are willing to offer the same skills to develop Bitcoin core for free), but i believe you need to start by joining the Bitcoin dev platform, and showing your dedication to the future of Bitcoin first. Having said that, if you truly have this knowledge, you posted the best chance you have if you apply for the particular open position through the new project that has the position open, and most projects add their open position to their social media page now.

This is not true and one does not have anything to do with the other. Actually, a lot of the most active developers now are part of the new generation that can't be considered early anything. I think it is a good practice to improve your skill though. From what I can observe, good contributors do not have issues finding funding for their work. Especially those that stay out of drama and focus on building.
