So I’m diving into the AvalonMiner 741, which is a SHA-256 ASIC miner with a hash rate of 7.3 Th/s and draws about 1150 watts of power. This is made by Canaan Creative, a company based in Beijing.
Here’s what I’ll cover:
1) Basic info and other stuff you’ll need
2) Unboxing experience
3) General overview
4) Setting up the controller unit
5) Installation process
6) Configuration steps
7) Testing phase
8) Power consumption analysis
9) Wrap-up
10) How to purchase one

I also have a nicely formatted version (as of February 18, 2018) available for download at this link: https://mega.nz/#!45kQXA6K!7uUcotnsTH3ppYReveaCRNnHIPvWiM5PAPiAdEwGMm8
1) Basic info and what you need to get started.
The AvalonMiner 741 utilizes advanced 16nm ASIC chip technology and does not come with a built-in controller, so you’ll need to get either the AvalonMiner Controller or a Raspberry Pi to operate it. A cool thing is you can connect multiple AvalonMiners to one Raspberry Pi for easier management.
Included with the miner, you’ll find:
- 1 AvalonMiner 741 unit
- 1 AvalonMiner USB Converter 3 (AUC3)
- 1 Micro USB Cable
- 1 AUC3 I2C 5PIN Cable
This miner weighs about 4.3 kg with dimensions of 320mm (length) x 136mm (width) x 150mm (height). Its hashrate usually falls between 7.3 to 8.0 Th/s while consuming 1150 Watts.
This review will cover both the hardware and my experience buying it from a local supplier.

Great review! I really do like that cooling solution. Looks a lot like one

Awesome review brother.
A question about these Avalons - is the single fan an intake or an exhaust? Want to have an idea of how to handle ventilation should I pick up a batch.

Exhaust fan. We tested shrouds but this requires removing the stock fan.

Great review! Very helpful and comprehensive.
I've read a few threads about cleaning the 741 and it doesn't seem to be all that hard, but I was curious if you have any extra tips for care/maintenance?
One word: compressed air.
Do not vacuum it, because of the risk for static electricity.

Great, thanks again.
Will blowing some air on intake/outtake have much of an effect or should I just sack up and disassemble entirely for cleaning?
Please remove the fan first, and I would also remove the 'honeycomb' grill too to allow more space for cleaning through the unit with compressed air.

Eth or etc --> no.
Ltc --> no.
Bitcoin --> yes.
Any other SHA-256 algorithm based crypto --> yes.

Went ahead and cleaned mine for the first time since it started running (almost 40 days). Removing 8 screws is not that time consuming and I had it back online before the next block on slush
thanks again for the review
Will you do review for 821?
Yes!
A741 is a EOL product (end-of-life). No new units are going to be sold anymore.
You can only search for used units.
This review is now updated in February 18, 2018 and there is a nicely formatted version of this review/guide available for download.

This will most likely be the final update for this review/guide, as AvalonMiner 741 is an EOL (end of life) product now.

Thank you for the very good walkthrough!
I would like to ask what do you think about the used items that cryptouniverse is now selling.
https://www.cryptouniverse.at/shop/avalonminer-741-used-condition/
I am planning to use them in a location with very low energy cost
I think it is a good offer and Cryptouniverse is an official distributor for Canaan Creative hardware, they are trustworthy.
