So, the big test in the gold stack is the Sigma PMA. A lot of people here are shifting their profits into physical gold bars to hedge against market swings. It's important to realize that the verification issues on the institutional end have actually gotten worse. Throughout 2024 and 2025, counterfeits with a tungsten shell from Shenzhen have started showing up with US and EU wholesalers.
Here’s the dealer protocol that helps catch these fakes in under 5 minutes per bar:
- XRF testing for surface material
- Ultrasound to check for sub-surface echoes (the tungsten inside gives off a unique signature)
- Density check via Archimedes method ±0.01 g/cc
- Sigma PMV for electromagnetic conductivity (gold is 45.2 while tungsten is 18.9 MS/m, so faking it isn’t possible)
- Caliper measurements plus LBMA serial number verification
If your dealer isn't able to do at least three of these tests in front of you when you're buying, you should look for another dealer. There’s a complete breakdown of this, plus a case study showing a $475K/year ROI, here: https://www.wisermachine.com/bullion-dealer-incoming-gold-bar-xrf-verification-sop-2026/
This is about a 5-minute read, it's aimed at dealers but definitely useful for anyone looking to buy $10K+ bars.
