For centuries now, Africa has been a key player in supplying mineral resources that the global economy relies on. When you think about gold, agricultural products like cocoa, diamonds, cobalt, copper, iron ore, as well as oil and gas, much of what drives industries in Europe, America, and Asia comes from Africa.
A ton of the tech we use today, like batteries, smartphones, and cars, depend heavily on minerals that are either extracted or sourced from the continent.
Countless industries worldwide are deeply dependent on these resources to keep their production lines running and their economies thriving. If access to these materials were to be suddenly cut off, a massive number of global supply chains would face immediate impacts, and many would struggle to adapt.
So here’s the big question: CAN THE WORLD FUNCTION WITHOUT AFRICA?
Considering how interconnected everything is these days, it’s pretty clear that Africa isn’t just a part of the global system; it’s a crucial foundation holding a huge chunk of it together.
Let’s break it down:
Research indicates that Africa possesses:
Gold: About 40% of global reserves
Diamonds: 50-56% of global production/reserves
Cobalt: 50-70% of global supply
Platinum: 60-90% of global reserves
Chromium: 80-90% of global reserves
Manganese: 50-82% of global reserves
Copper: 10-12% of global reserves
Iron ore: 2-15% of global reserves
Uranium: 15-18% of global reserves
And also about 65% of the world’s arable land.

"Without Africa" can be assumed to be several things:
1. The continent never existed.
2. All African countries suddenly decided to isolate themselves.
I haven't checked the global demand for each of Africa's natural resources mentioned, but I believe the world will survive on its own, as civilization is clearly constantly seeking innovation and alternatives.
The world will be able to survive without Africa, North America, South America, Asia, Europe or Australia. Having such enormous amounts of miners does not mean humans can not survive without it, but it only brings ease.
Africa has 30% of the world's minerals, that is enough to know how important Africa is when discussing about minerals.

The world can not do without Africa and Africa can not do without the world, Africa is blessed with lots of natural resources but still has the poorest standard of living because of the type of leaders in Africa.
The reality is that Africa is the one surviving off other countries, Aids, loans, migration, Africans with all the natural resources are not benefiting from it. The world on the other hand gets natural resources from Africa legally or through questionable practices.

What a load of BS
US, Russia, Canada, China and Brazil hold 50% of the whole agricutural land in th world.
You're telling me that Africa, with 20% of the size of the world's land, holds 60% of the agricultural land?
As usual, it's pure bullshit propaganda from an NGO trying to get money, the truth is:
So 2% is a flex right now?
8% of the world's gas and 12% of the world's oil, while having 20% of the population!
The world would be perfectly fine; you should ask yourself the opposite question!
Its hard to call Africa "UNIQUE", but it certainly has its own distinctive characteristics-just like any other continent.
Africa contributes to the global economy with its resources, which have their own consumer properties-in some ways more attractive than those from other continents. At the same time, Africa faces significant challenges with other resources, which are either absent or very limited on the continent.
Take platinum, for example: yes, the market has a price determined by supply and demand. But South Africa and Zimbabwe arent the only suppliers-they simply have the largest reserves, while other countries also mine it. Yes, South Africa and Zimbabwe sell platinum at a premium price
But they also purchase raw materials and goods at world prices-resources that South Africa and Zimbabwe do not produce. And in this way, the economy remains in balance, provided that these two countries do not act as "exclusive" suppliers of platinum, because there is still competition in the market.
If the price is artificially raised too high, the economy wont benefit. More precisely, it will benefit in the short term, but in the long term, it will suffer. The reason is simple: alternative sources will be developed, or platinum will be replaced with alternative materials, and South Africa and Zimbabwe will simply lose their market share.
P.S. Well probably also see a battle over the ice in Antarctica
Thats it, the damage was done to Africa when European countries like the United Kingdom,
Netherlands, Belgium and Germany stamped their authority there and plundered and carved
up the continent for themselves making enormous wealth from the natural resources.
Africa isnt going anywhere so its a non conversation talking as if they are. Global trade is all
connected for better or worse and we are living in a global supply chain, some countries are
making and taking more than others.

Yes, that's broadly stated in the OP. I mean, how much demand is there actually?
There will probably be different levels of hardship in each country when Africa stops producing minerals. Because not all countries are major importers of African minerals.
On the other hand, I imagine (not referring to Africa), if the Earth's mineral reserves were cut by 50% millions of years ago, humans would still have developed a different version of civilization.
The question you have to ask yourself is has the world not been moving forward without Africa from the inception of time. The world has been moving on without the help of Africa. I think that the first sets of adventurers had contact with African in the 15 to 16 century which culminated in the sharing of Africa in the 1885. Before now the world has been moving developing without Africa so the equation is that the world will continue to move without Africa.
But currently the world has only in need of the natural resources that Africa needs and nothing else. What we should know is that at every point in time the world has been experiencing a certain level of technology which every one country will struggle to have. In this present time Africa only have to be in possession of the resources that the world needs. If these minerals finish today the world will move on naturally.
The stats you shared are really important for the world. Their cobalt is used for lithium-ion batteries, and we all know how important these batteries are. Without them, a lot of operations would not survive electricity lockdowns during wars or other geopolitical stress situations.
I can't overlook the importance of Africa now. Their manganese and chromium are important for stainless steel. Without stainless steel, global construction, aerospace, and defense industries could freeze. Although defense industries might use other materials as well, this is still a primary material.
Even phosphorus, of which around 70% exists in Morocco, helps in agricultural fertilizers. Without this phosphate, crops worldwide would plummet as well.
Microchips, batteries, and related industries could affect Silicon Valley, while shortages of food and industrial materials could create wider problems. These are basic human needs.

Sad reality, haven't had up to 30% of mineral resources coming from them, still they can't utilize all of them to their advantage to make their country a great nation without exporting them overseas to make some other things out of them.
It's a hard time for Africa to rise up as a dependable country that produces almost all the things they make use of in their country, without giving a large portion of their mineral resources to the American and Chinese governments to utilize on their behalf
Africa is rich in natural resources and contribute immensely in the global supply chain of raw materials. Despite this, the world can survive without Africa but the prices of some of these natural resources will be higher than they are now because of the shortage in supply and increasing demand. There is no known natural resources that is exclusively in Africa, we still have them in other part of the world in various quantities. Even the rare earth metals, China still lead in terms of their deposit. Hence, the world can survive without Africa and so can it survive without any of the continent.
One thing to understand is that no one has it all. You may need Africa for some of its mineral resources, and Africa may need America or Asia for what they have. If all the mineral resources Africa has are no longer available, others who rely on Africa's mineral resources will still survive because one thing about humans is that they are very easy to adapt, and there will be alternatives to all these resources.
Just for instance, there are countries that rely on gas to produce electricity, but solar energy and hydro can replace gas. People will always look for other things to survive.
The world can still survive without Africa, but the only thing is that it will take time before they can be independent. If the world try to be independent without Africa now the economic growth of such contenent will slow because the raw Materials from other contenent will not be enough to produced materials that will be sustainable to the world. They will learn to adapt with the system as time goes on. Just like big industry needed crude oil to refine and produce petrol for generator, car and motorcycle consuptiom and other form of machine that consumes petrol. But today there are a lot improvement that make it easy to use many solar powered devices, which makes petrol reduce in it consumption and demand. And it's important because it reduce noise and environmental pollution. This makes it easy for people to feel comfortable without using crude oils or petrol. Now the dependency of one African product has reduced it value. And over time a lot of discoveries will be made and most item may not be tmvaluable anymore. But for now they completely need Africa to survive.
Creatures or humans are dynamic, they will adapt according to the situation, please forgive me for not underestimating but we see the way of logic, if since then Africa has never existed then we can do without Africa, but if today the world is addicted to what is produced by Africa, of course it is difficult without them, but that is not the most critical situation but rather a challenge of how we have become accustomed to their existence and we are aware that we live without having to rely on Africa, in some years it may be difficult, but rest assured that humans are dynamic creatures and can adapt in many places and situations as I mentioned, certainly can do that.

I think you've placed too much importance on Africa. Aside from the few countries that exploit that continent, nobody cares about Africa. The idea that if the world could survive without them is beyond absurd. None of the minerals you mentioned are critically important to humanity. Let the countries that exploit you worry about that, it doesn't matter at all to the average person. I think this is the funniest thread I've seen on the forum lately.
I guess you mean the humans? Because the world is not filled with humans alone, it is the birth place of million other things.
There are people still out there who live fine with no advancement for like the last 10k years or something. Have you ever heard of Sentinels? That is the proof that we can survive anything with water and something to take our calories.
Africa is giving a lot of natural resources for a fraction of cost with cheap labour, while their corrupt leaders are making money in an unofficial way, so pick the right leaders, then world will pay you the right price for everything.
Africa can do without the other continents but the other continents especially the Europe and America cannot survive without Africa. Africa is a blessed continent which has stayed rewarded and blessed for a very long time with rich natural and mineral resources. If Africa was so calm and forward thinking, we could have fabricated most of our products ourselves and not allow the foreigners to have that edge over us. But we layed ourselves on the floor for these colonial masters to climb, leading to colonialism and subsequently neocolonialism.
Without Africa is in the context of Africa countries isolating themselves.. (Which history has practically shown few countries actually did it at some point)
You could check them out, all of the numbers i wrote are researched datas..
I will as well not dispute that the world could still survive on its own, but my point is the impact would be felt in a really strong way, and some part of the world may struggle to keep up for sometime.
A solid point Charles-Tim, after all the world did have a civilization even befor the discovery of natural/mineral resources..
But also seeing the from a different angle, and also judging from the word you used ease
Humans has currently built a world that cant survive without all of this things anymore.. Talking about industrialization, Transportation, and so on. With the way the world keep growing fast, its will be so difficult to survive off the earth resource in this current age..
Off course, definitely important..
You made a point here..
But you arent fully correct here.. Youre simply seeing things from the masses perspective.. AIDS and Loans arent 100% to help Africa...
And talking about the world getting natural resources from Africa legally.. hmmm
.
Yeah, I wouldnt deny the fact that Africa leaders are one of the major problem of Africa..
Corruption they say is the bedrock of underdevelopment and others of its kinds. Africa is one continent blessed with numerous mineral resources that can keep them independent but because of the existence of corrupt leaders all there resources that is supposed to serve as a stepping stone to success is now giving out to others in exchange of peanuts that won't be enough for anything. I would say if Africa could stand and manage there resources it will be very difficult for most nations to experience a balanced economy.
