options for T17 heatsink adhesive

hey everyone, I just got my first miner last month, the T17 with 42TH. It showed up with one heatsink not attached, probably due to shipping. I tried some thermal pastes like Corsair MX30, but no luck. Now my T17 only has 2 out of 3 hashboards working and it's hashing at about 27-28TH. I know about that black glue from China, but I'm worried about the shipping time making it useless by the time it arrives. I’ve read it’s supposed to be kept in the fridge, and shipping to my place takes around 7-15 days, not counting customs. Has anyone had success with a thermal paste that’s still on the market? I was looking for Arctic Silver Alumina adhesive, but it seems to be out of stock everywhere. I did find Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut Thermal Grease Paste 10ml locally, but it’s pretty pricey at around 130 bucks here, and I’m hesitant since it might just perform like the Corsair MX30 (which I left for 3 days and it fell off when I flipped the hashboard). Appreciate any suggestions!

Be aware that the heatsinks on T17's are soldered on - NOT glued. Using solder gives almost 1/2 the thermal resistance that any glue can provide. In short - using glue will result in the chip running much hotter but at least the heatsink will stay in-place. Using paste is right out as it will not hold the heatsink in position and the 'sink will soon fall off.

Make sure it was the heatsink that fell off the chip, not the chip that fell off the board. Is the chip surface undamaged? There's a S17/T17 hack and repair thread here with a pretty decent writeup on how to re-solder the heatsinks but it'll require a bit of equipment to do it right. Bitmain used a low-temperature-process solder which is good for cooling and repair work but bad for operating especially in T-series miners which tend to push high power levels and therefore high temperatures, close enough to melting that the solder gets pretty weak. Most thermal pastes are not designed as adhesives, so if they "stick" two things together in a permanent bond it's probably because something very bad happened. If a product is designed to glue heatsinks on, it'll say so up-front and words like "grease" and "paste" will probably not be in the title.

Black glue does work well for sticking heat sinks to chips and requires refrigeration. But this thermoset adhesive is usually used for S9 and L3+, black glue is usually not used for Antminer 17 series hash board. The heat sink of 17 series is usually soldered on the tin plating on the surface of the chip, so long-term high temperature can easily cause oxidation and the heat sink will fall off. This is the most common failure of the 17 series. At present, if there are too many falling heat sinks, the best way to solve this problem is to refit upgrade heat sink.

As suggested go ahead and use the old thermal setting compound. The 17th are old enough and get hot enough that the top copper layer of the ASIC has actually been alloyed away into the solder and no longer exists as a solderable surface ”black chip”. Clean with a mild acid such as DEoxit Gold for good adhesion. If you wanna go further there are heat sink epoxies I cannot speak to with experience. I am finally there is the traditional Heatsink adhesive, thermal silicone. Lots of options other than replacing the ASIC! good luck
